CHAPTER ELEVEN

AT THE SOUND OF the cabin’s front door creaking open, Royce Friesen lifted his head from his bloodstained pillow. Blinking his gritty eyes, he struggled to focus through a gnashing veil of pain as he watched Gregory stalk through the bedroom doorway, a terrorized human female held tight against the front of his body. The flickering wash of light from the lone candle that sat on the floor beside his mattress fell short of her trembling form, but his keen vision allowed Royce to see her clearly, despite the thickening shadows of night. Her hands had been tied behind her back, the remnants of what had once been a blood red sundress hanging in tatters around the lush, womanly shape of her figure. She had an earthy, sensual beauty, with her long legs, heavy breasts and thick, curly hair that tumbled in riotous waves over her quaking shoulders. But it was the stark, unmistakable fear in her sloe-dark eyes that called to him, making his groin pull tight with need.

“What the hell are you doing?” he croaked, his voice scratchy from the deep wounds that were still healing in his throat.

Gregory’s smile spread slowly across his human face as he nuzzled the woman’s ear. “Consider her a gift to help with your recovery.”

Lifting up onto his right elbow, Royce wet his lips, his natural instinct for the kill warring with his knowledge that he couldn’t risk letting himself lose control. Though his heart was still beating, he’d lost too much blood from his wounds, and now his hunger was like a raging, feral beast within his body, ravenous for a good, long feeding. He wanted her, badly, but feared that his bloodlust, once sated, would quickly rise again, becoming too strong, too powerful, stripping him of his control—and he’d end up suffering the same fate as Malcolm.

As if reading his indecision, Gregory shook his head, while a low, wicked rumble of laughter slipped from his lips. “Poor Royce. You’re trying so hard to be good, but guess what? The devil can act the saint, but it still won’t get him into heaven.”

“I don’t want into heaven,” he growled, curling his lip. “I just want to stay out of hell. I don’t want to end up like your brother.”

“And you don’t think that’s where you’re headed?” Gregory drawled. “If you’re too weak when you face our enemies, hell is exactly where they’re going to send you.”

Royce didn’t trust Gregory DeKreznick worth a damn, knowing the Casus just wanted him healthy enough to help find the Buchanan bitch, now that they’d lost her. And once they had her, he had little doubt that Gregory would turn on him, seeing as how he suspected that Gregory planned on taking Saige for himself, regardless of the fact that she belonged to him. But he couldn’t argue that the psychotic bastard had a point. As it was, he’d be an easy kill for anyone who tried to take him down, and he couldn’t let that happen.
